40 Year thanks!

April 28th, 2010 No comments

Day 2 being 40… feels much like day 364 of being 39!

Last night (My official Birthdate) I allowed myself to open the cards and gifts from everyone, so many cards and some very generous gifts from you all! I can’t thank you all enough. Thank you!!

As a momento of Saturday night I’ve put some photo’s from the (non) Birthday party onto Facebook for all to enjoy.

Also below there is a small record of my cards. Clicking on them will zoom in and allow you to read them hopefully!

So thank you all for cards, presents, Facebook messages, emails, tweets and your presence at my party if you could make it. You’ve humbled a Northern Monkey…

Marcus.

iPad review updated with a new look

April 21st, 2010 No comments
You may notice a new look to the www.iPad-review.co.uk pages, in comes a sleeker and faster site for your pleasure, this was due to the old site causing a few speed issues for some. Apologies for that! Along with the new look you will also find a nicely formatted version if you browse to the site on your iPhone. I’m now a proud owner of an iPad, it arrived in the UK just before the Icelandic volcano grounded all flights to the UK so you can expect some real reviews very soon. First onto my reviewing sofa will be Corkulous.

No Internet for 4-5 days!

April 14th, 2010 No comments

As my transition from Virgin to Sky reaches it’s climatic end it seems I’ve made a slight miscalculation, Virgin Cable Broadband ceases Thursday 15th April, Sky Broadband begins Monday 19th April. 5 Days without Internet Access. You should of seen the faces on everyone in the house when I explained the oversight, it was almost as if we’d lost dear friend in high speed internet accident.

Of course we all still have our mobiles but it’s impossible to get a 3G signal anywhere in the house or else I would of used my iPhone as a WiFi hotspot using MiWi as it’s a great little jailbroken app.

The Broadband equipment will be with me tomorrow so I have my fingers crossed that maybe the Broadband provisioning may get completed earlier… but Im not holding out too much hope for this! So, if you see me in McDonalds with my little Hackintosh abusing the free WiFi come and say hi!

I’ve gotten cold feet with my ZenPad order

April 12th, 2010 No comments

I’ve requested to cancel my ZenPad as the release date has now been put back to the 8th of May 2010. Annoying as when I placed the order there was a 5-7 day shipping.

Added to this the report from Engadget about the whole ZenPad / Enso-Now.com background I think it prudent to get my cash back now! The Enso-Now website assures that a release is imminent and that the ZenPad will now ship with Android 2.1 but I’ve lost faith in this little startup and will now await some reviews and some news of shipping actually taken place.

My iPads been delayed

April 2nd, 2010 No comments

Just had a call from someone at BundleBox with reference to my iPad order, Apple have delayed delivery of my iPad until the 12th of April. I ordered within hours of the iPad launch, and had confirmation from Bundlebox, Apple announced a few days later that the initial allocation had been sold and any new orders would need to wait until the 12th of April.

With still no UK announcement of pre orders not sure if I still wait for Bundlebox or now wait for the UK launch…..

zenPad update

April 1st, 2010 No comments

Followed up on my order for the zenPad as I’ve not received any shipping/tracking details yet, and surprise surprise they are struggling to keep up with the “demand”.

Dear valued customer,

We did receive your order and payment.

Due to our huge and sudden success, our facilities have a hard time to keep up with demand and shipping delays are longer than expected. Be assured that we have your best interests at heart and that we are making all our possible to ship as fast as possible. You will receive an e-mail notice as soon as your order is shipped.

Thank you for your patience.

5-7 days from order and now it looks like my iPad stands a good chance of arriving first!

zenPad from Enso-now on order.

March 26th, 2010 No comments

Ok, I think my gadget addiction is getting out of control now. I’ve gone and ordered a 5″ Android based tablet to play with now. I figure this could be my commuting device rather than the iPad, the iPad will fit into my life as a sofa surfing experience more than anything else. I think it maybe a little too large to use on a train hence I thought I’d take a look at the Enso-Now zenPad.

The zenPad comes in at a very competitive price starting from $155 to $180 (GPS version), you can also add a 3G Micro USB dongle for $35 if you wish. Worldwide shipping is a flat $25.

Currently ships with Android 1.6 but a version of 2.x will be available within 1 month if the website is to be believed. It comes with an 8GB SD card and runs with a Samsung 6410, 533/667MHz processor which should keep the battery consumption down. Full access to the Android Market is available also. WiFi up to n speed and up to 6hours battery life.

Overall it looks like a cheap little device that could be useful to me. If not… Im sure either the kids would love with a few children’s apps on it or eBay!

I’ll drop a full review once it arrives.

Mac OSX on a Netbook

March 25th, 2010 No comments

As I wait and wait for Apple to release a new version of the MacBook Pro range I’ve been laptop less for 3 months now. I gifted my old 13″ MacBook to Alex as a christmas gift (He’s now a Mac convert also!)

I did have his 17″ HP Laptop but I found it heavy and too big for sitting on my lap, which to me is the whole point of a laptop. So to fill the gap I “borrowed” Louise’s little Advent 4211 Netbook and set upon getting OSX running on it. Luckily the Advent is basically an MSI Wind underneath the Advent rebadging so it was really easy! If you want details take a look over at the Wiki and Forums at Insanelywind.com if you have an Advent or MSI Wind netbook.

Other Netbooks can be given the joy of Mac OSX also, take a look at the compatibility chart at myMacNetbook.com

So how does the netbook handle Mac OSX? Well im pleased to say excellently! It’s actually better than the Win 7 install I had on it before. I’ve managed to install all my apps that I’d ever need on the road (or the sofa) and it all runs along at a good rate of knots. The smaller screen real estate can lead to some minor problems, but that was the same in Windows also. With this Netbook all the hardware works, it really is a mini MacBook. If you have an netbook lying around take a look at the above compatibility chart and if possible throw OSX on it.
